Looking to upgrade your driveway, front entrances, walkway, and back patio? Choosing the right material and finish is crucial. With a variety of options available, including interlocking stone and different types of concrete finishes, limestone finished concrete is rapidly gaining popularity among homeowners in Ontario who want a modern curb appeal for their homes.

What is Modern Concrete or Limestone-Finished Concrete

Limestone-finished concrete, also referred to as Modern Concrete, is a specialized type of concrete finish designed to replicate the timeless beauty of natural limestone. Limestone is a smooth natural stone used in many homes for a nicer finish.   However, natural limestone is very expensive and hard to maintain due to its porous nature.  By mimicking the texture and look of natural limestone, Modern Concrete combines the durability and affordability of concrete with the classic elegance of limestone, offering homeowners the best of both worlds.

How Is the Limestone-Finished Concrete Look Achieved

To mimic the texture of natural limestone, after the concrete is poured on the outdoor surface, the concrete is hand polished and then let dry for 28 days to reach a strength of 32MPa (megapascal) concrete.  Once the concrete reaches its prime strength, it undergoes a sandblasting process to create a smooth, slip-resistant finish, reminiscent of natural limestone. And to top it off, we apply a waterproofing membrane called Hydrostop, transforming it into a maintenance-free and stain-resistant concrete solution.

Best Places to Use the Modern Concrete

Limestone-Finished Concrete Finish is a relatively new type of concrete finish used in driveways, walkways, backyard patios and pool deck to give the home a modern look.  There are great for flat and wide spaces and are often used alongside artificial turf.

Landscaping projects have been known to increase the property values of houses in the Greater Toronto Area. These projects can include planting of trees, gardening, adding a deck, and addition of structures that improves the curb appeal of GTA homes. And when compared to gardening, one Toronto landscape designer has also mentioned that when it comes to landscaping, “curb appeal is the No. 1 place to invest”.

That is why many homeowners install interlocking stone for use around their property. While some maintenance is required, its durability and versatility are reasons for its popularity. These pavers can be used in many different areas from driveways to backyard patios to pool decks. Below are examples of how interlocking stones can be utilized. For different interlock front entrance and walkway designs, check out our article Interlocking Design Ideas For Your Front Entrance and Walkways.

Landscaping — Why It’s Important for Your Home https://markstonelandscaping.com/landscaping-for-your-home/ Sun, 03 Dec 2017 16:03:48 +0000 http://www.mayascapes.com/msl/?p=5000 The post Landscaping — Why It’s Important for Your Home appeared first on Markstone Landscaping.

Landscaping (no matter where you live and where we serve – Mississauga, Brampton, Oakville, Burlington, and Milton) is important for a number of reasons that include:

  1. Bringing vigor and energy to the space
  2. Increasing value to your home
  3. Less yard work
Landscaping Improves Curb Appeal

For some people, curb appeal landscaping is a good way to help get your home sold at a higher value.  Consider this, landscaping is like putting clothes on your body. You need to dress for the part. If you were going to a formal event, you wouldn’t put on your gym clothes. If you did, people would take one look at you and make negative judgments and you didn’t even get a chance to talk about what you are really like.

If the home is sitting on a property that doesn’t look perfect, you’re going to lose a lot of sales opportunities. More often than not, people will drive by a property before actually making an appointment to check out the inside. They want to get a feel for or imagine what the house looks like. If the landscaping turns them off, they’ll never make the initial call. Unless they are fixer uppers, nobody wants re-do the landscaping themselves. Don’t make them imagine what it would be like; clean it up for them.

Landscaping for Quality Living

For others, they want to enjoy the space that they are living. Now that stay-cations are certainly becoming a more popular form of “time-off”, having a good landscaped yard is important. Good landscaping design is important whether you want to do this for your backyard or your front yard landscaping or pool.

Planning is critical because it helps you do two things:

  1. Know what you want – saves time and money
  2. Communicate clearly to your suppliers and designer

If you’ve taken the time to sketch out (doesn’t have to be perfect) what you want, your vision of what your front yard or backyard will start to take shape and what you end up with is something that you really want as opposed to living with something you just don’t like.

A sketch also gives you the opportunity to communicate clearly to your designer/supplier. They can help you figure out whether concrete or interlocking is best material to use for your design, your material costs (interlock or concrete) and possibly provide invaluable advice on how to improve your plan on aesthetics or costs or durability or even all three.

Lastly, many people get landscaping done because they want something that is low maintenance because of their lifestyle or don’t necessarily have time and effort or both. Interlocking pavers as well as concrete both require much less work to upkeep when compared to asphalt.

If this is the case, using concrete and/or interlocking pavers strategically in your front yard or backyard can help you minimize the amount landscaping work that is required on an ongoing basis while still maintaining the curb appeal of your home.

Remember, when you are thinking about landscaping, do not be afraid to experiment with new ideas and have fun creating your own design. There are endless possibilities when it comes to landscaping.

A behind-the-scenes look at a backyard landscaping project in Mississauga

Recently we had the opportunity to work on overhauling a backyard in Mississauga which included an existing in ground pool. This undertaking, from start to finish, took 3 weeks to complete. The goal is to transform the original backyard and pool deck into a relaxing oasis where friends and family can gather during the beautiful summer months in Ontario. For more details on what swimming pool contractors need to consider when installing pavers around a pool deck, click here.

Preparing for the Backyard Transformation

To ensure the project site is levelled, a regrading of the entire backyard (including pool deck area) was performed.

Interlocking Stones for Pool Deck

As with any landscaping project, there are many material types to choose from.  Based on the budget, maintenance level, durability and aesthetics, the pool deck utilized Trevista 80 – Grey Mix interlocking stone, creating a contemporary and inviting look.

By using interlocking stones, its surface reflects the heat from the scorching sun during the summer months, making it barefoot friendly.  In addition, since it is slip resistant, it prevents falls with kids and adults alike.

Smooth bullnose copings surround the pool’s profile enhancing the clean, simple and classic style.

To complete the pool deck space, interlock retaining walls were erected which runs along the back and side fences.

Concrete was used for the cabana padding along with the skirt around the pool.  Lastly, new sod, leading from the house to the pool deck, was installed.

Completed Backyard Oasis

By undertaking a complete backyard and pool deck makeover, family and friends can enjoy the summer months for years to come.  A well leveled yard and professionally installed interlock stone pool deck requires little maintenance to keep it looking like a summer retreat.

Simple Steps to Filling in an Existing Pool https://markstonelandscaping.com/simple-steps-filling-existing-pool/ Tue, 07 Jun 2016 14:20:52 +0000 http://www.mayascapes.com/msl/?p=1919 The post Simple Steps to Filling in an Existing Pool appeared first on Markstone Landscaping.

There are many reasons why people want to fill in their existing pool. It may be because it is no longer utilized, high maintenance cost to up keep, becoming dangerous with new additions to the family or simply just a change in scenery. No matter what your reason is, the important thing is to find a reputable company to get the job done right. Here are the basic steps to backfilling a swimming pool. Note that the size, type and accessibility of the pool will be factors that determines the cost and exact procedures required for the project.

Step 1: Preparation work – Laying of Plywood, Removal of Gates and Gas Lines
Plywood is laid down leading up to the pool to prevent any lawn damage. If required, gates are removed and will be reattached upon completion of the project. Gas lines leading from the gas meter to the pool pump will be removed and capped.

Step 2: Pool Drainage
If the pool is still filled with water, an electric pump is used to pump out the water and drained into the city sewer. Holes approximately 6’ x 6’ are punched, one in the deep end and one in the shallow end for proper drainage. Concrete swimming pools require the sides to be broken around 2 feet below ground level while vinyl liners will be cut out, removed and disposed of.

Step 3: Pool Fill In
Dump trucks carrying contaminant free, high quality, clean fill top soil which minimizes sinking is delivered and placed on the road. Skid steers or front end loaders are used to transport the soil from the road to the location of the pool. Markstone’s state of the art equipment is used to fill the swimming pool with soil which gets compacted throughout the process to mitigate sinking. Premium top soil is used to fill the last one-foot depth of the pool as well as the entire yard which will promote sod and plant growth.

Step 4: Final touches
Depending on the client’s request, the newly filled-in area can now be landscaped with concrete, interlock or sod. Upon completion of the landscape, a thorough clean up of the area, including removal of plywood, reinstallation of gates and any necessary work will take place.

Step 5. Enjoy!
Sit back, relax and soak in the newly reclaimed backyard oasis
