Looking to upgrade your driveway, front entrances, walkway, and back patio? Choosing the right material and finish is crucial. With a variety of options available, including interlocking stone and different types of concrete finishes, limestone finished concrete is rapidly gaining popularity among homeowners in Ontario who want a modern curb appeal for their homes.

What is Modern Concrete or Limestone-Finished Concrete

Limestone-finished concrete, also referred to as Modern Concrete, is a specialized type of concrete finish designed to replicate the timeless beauty of natural limestone. Limestone is a smooth natural stone used in many homes for a nicer finish. However, natural limestone is very expensive and hard to maintain due to its porous nature. By mimicking the texture and look of natural limestone, Modern Concrete combines the durability and affordability of concrete with the classic elegance of limestone, offering homeowners the best of both worlds.

How Is the Limestone-Finished Concrete Look Achieved

To mimic the texture of natural limestone, after the concrete is poured on the outdoor surface, the concrete is hand polished and then let dry for 28 days to reach a strength of 32MPa (megapascal) concrete. Once the concrete reaches its prime strength, it undergoes a sandblasting process to create a smooth, slip-resistant finish, reminiscent of natural limestone. And to top it off, we apply a waterproofing membrane called Hydrostop, transforming it into a maintenance-free and stain-resistant concrete solution.

Best Places to Use the Modern Concrete

Limestone-Finished Concrete Finish is a relatively new type of concrete finish used in driveways, walkways, backyard patios and pool deck to give the home a modern look. There are great for flat and wide spaces and are often used alongside artificial turf.

Brushed Concrete for Your Driveway, Walkway, and Backyard Patio https://markstonelandscaping.com/what-is-brushed-concrete/ Fri, 16 Jun 2023 15:42:24 +0000 https://markstonelandscaping.com/?p=7155 The post Brushed Concrete for Your Driveway, Walkway, and Backyard Patio appeared first on Markstone Landscaping.

When it comes to enhancing the aesthetic appeal and durability of outdoor spaces like driveways, walkways and back patios, choosing the right material is crucial. While there are many material options to choose from, including interlocking stone and concrete, one of the most popular options is Brushed Concrete. In this article, we will explore what brushed concrete is, its advantages, and why it’s an ideal choice for your driveway, walkway, and backyard patio.

What is Brushed Concrete?

Brushed concrete is the entry level finish among the four types of concrete finish offered by Markstone Landscaping. It is a finishing technique that creates a textured pattern on the surface of freshly poured concrete. After the concrete has been poured, levelled and smoothened, a broom is used to create brush strokes on the drying concrete, leaving behind a subtle, visually appealing texture. This process adds an element of style and grip, making it an excellent choice for areas where slip resistance is important.

Benefits of Brushed Concrete

Brushed concrete gives you all the benefits that concrete offers, including the following:

 1. Enhanced Slip Resistance: One of the primary advantages of brushed concrete is its improved traction. The textured surface provides a reliable grip, reducing the risk of accidents due to slips and falls, especially in areas prone to water or heavy foot traffic.
 2. Durability and Longevity: Brushed concrete is highly durable and built to withstand the test of time. It can handle the weight of vehicles and foot traffic without significant wear and tear, making it an excellent long-term investment for your outdoor spaces.
 3. Low Maintenance: Unlike other materials such as pavers or natural stone, brushed concrete requires minimal maintenance. It does not require regular sealing or extensive cleaning, saving you time and effort in the long run.
 4. Cost-Effective: When compared to high-end materials like natural stone or stamped concrete, brushed concrete offers an affordable alternative without compromising on functionality. It provides a cost-effective solution for homeowners looking to enhance their outdoor areas on a budget.
 5. Customization Options: Brushed concrete can be customized to suit your aesthetic preferences. It comes in various colors, allowing you to choose a shade that complements your home’s exterior. Additionally, your concrete contractor can create different broom textures to achieve the desired look, from simple textures to a more pronounced pattern. And you can easily add borders using other finishes (e.g. exposed aggregate concrete, stamped concrete), or material (e.g. interlocking stone) to level up the aesthetics.

Brushed concrete offers a winning combination of style, durability, and practicality, making it an excellent choice for driveways, walkways, and backyard patios. Given its the least labour-intensive concrete finish, it’s a great option for homeowners looking for an economical and slip-resistant concrete driveway, walkway and/or backyard patio.

Are you considering concrete for your driveway, walkway or backyard patio? If you think concrete is boring, you may want to think again. There are many different types of concrete finishes to choose from, and you have the option of adding colour, borders and cut lines to give it a unique look and feel. Below, we’ve outlined four of the most popular types of concrete finish.

Four Types of Concrete Finish

Brushed Concrete
Brushed Concrete is a simple yet effective way to add some texture to the concrete and is the base level concrete finish offered at Markstone Landscaping. When the concrete is freshly poured, while the surface is still wet, a broom is used to brushed across the surface to create a brushed concrete texture. Brushed concrete may be sealed with a penetrating sealer by request

Exposed Aggregate Concrete
Exposed aggregate concrete is a type of concrete finish where the top layer is removed to expose the added aggregates. Pea gravel is added into the concrete mixture. After the concrete is poured, a chemical is applied to the surface to prevent the top-most layer from curing. The next day, this top layer is washed off to expose the pea gravel texture. Exposed concrete is finished with a high gloss sealer

Stamped Concrete
A stamped concrete finish is created by impressing textured forms onto the surface of the concrete before it has set. This texture may be enhanced with the application of colour to create contrast. Stamped concrete is finished with a high gloss, slip-resistant sealer

Modern (or Limestone-Finished) Concrete
Modern concrete is a smooth, matte finish concrete which resembles limestone. Once the concrete is poured and set, the surface is hand-polished and sandblasted. It is then finished with a penetrating sealer to provide a protective matte finish.

Options for your Concrete Project

Concrete Colours

Most concrete projects use the natural colour of concrete. However, if you’d like to add colour to your concrete landscape, you can choose from our integral colour or colour hardener colour palettes.

Colour Hardener is a coloured powder used to colour the surface of your concrete after it has been poured, while Integral Colour is a coloured powder that is mixed into the concrete while its still in the concrete truck. With Integral Colour, your concrete will be coloured all the way through as opposed to a layer of colour on the surface when using the Colour Hardener option.

Concrete Borders and Cuts

Add a finishing touch to your concrete project by adding a border and/or cuts.

Concrete borders can be a trowel or stamped borders. A trowel finish border is a smooth border created with a trowel, while a stamped border is created by impressing a texture into the border and finishing it with a colour hardener.

Concrete cuts are more than just a decorative way to finish your project – they serve to ensure that your concrete does not crack in unsightly places. You have the option of choosing square, diamond or custom cuts.

Contact us for a free estimate

The average price of concrete projects will vary depending on the concrete finish you choose along with other factors. Contact us to learn more about the various concrete options, or to request a no-obligation quote for your driveway, front entrance and backyard.

People don’t often give their driveway a lot of thought. That is, until it needs repair or begins to feel too small. There are many different reasons someone might decide to widen their driveway, and shuffling cars every time you need to go out might be near the top of the list. Whether your teenager has recently gotten their license, you have a recreational vehicle, or you live in a multigenerational home with many drivers, the idea of widening your driveway can be appealing. Not only can it make your life a little easier, but it can also be a significant asset, adding to your home’s curb appeal.

Widening a driveway in Misissauga by reducing the size of the front yard and installing interlocking across the whole driveway
Be Aware of Your City’s By-Laws When Widening Your Driveway

If you are considering taking on a driveway extension project, you will need to be aware of your municipality’s by-laws. Zoning by-laws can limit how wide your driveway can be, where you can put it on your lot, how you’re able to attach a walkway to your driveway, and the required surface treatment. Of course, a driveway widening contractor with experience in driveway extensions in your city can be an asset.

While building permits are not required for making changes to your existing driveway, you may need to obtain permissions depending on the work you have planned. For example, special permissions are required if the widening impacts the curb.

A good rule of thumb is to look around your neighbourhood. If the driveway you’re planning appears wider than your neighbours’, you may want to contact a by-law officer directly. There are variations in each municipality, and the time you put into research before you start could mean less hassle once the job is finished.

Ensuring the Longevity of your Interlocking Driveway and Patio: Choosing the Right Sand During Installation https://markstonelandscaping.com/ensuring-the-longevity-of-your-interlocking-driveway-and-patio/ Mon, 08 Jun 2020 20:39:23 +0000 https://markstonelandscaping.com/?p=6084 The post Ensuring the Longevity of your Interlocking Driveway and Patio: Choosing the Right Sand During Installation appeared first on Markstone Landscaping.

]]>

In our previous articles, we have mentioned that one of the primary benefits of using interlocking pavers on your driveway and backyard patio is that it doesn’t require as much maintenance over time, other than the occasional power wash and refilling of polymeric sand. This is predicated on the fact that the interlocking pavers were properly and professionally installed from the very start.

Based on our many years of experience as interlocking contractors, the key to ensuring the longevity of your stone pavers is highly dependent on the sand that is used during the construction process. Not all sand is the same, and some are better suited for use on interlocking paver projects.

For the bedding layer, we use limestone screening for the bedding material. It is this gravel bedding that provides final levelling properties and helps secure the paver units in place.

The other area where sand is used is for filling paver joints. The right type of sand for filling in the joints between individual stone pavers is a sand mixture that has multiple grain sizes as well as sharp edges. For this purpose, we don’t use very fine sand since they are more likely to be washed or blown away from the joints over time. Filler sand needs to bind together to create a smooth surface while not slipping and sliding and moving around. The best sand to use in between the paver joints is polymeric sand

Benefits of Polymeric Sand for Interlocking Paver Filler Joints

Polymeric sand is water-activated and is made of a mixture of graded sand and binder. When polymeric sand is exposed to moisture, it forms a strong yet flexible bond to create the strongest interlocking properties possible. This prevents erosion caused by rain and wind, which makes polymeric sand a great material to resist the harsh conditions and extreme weather swings that happens in Ontario. Best of all, polymeric sand has the added benefit of preventing weed growth in between pavers. This is why we recommend putting more polymeric sand in between the stones as part of our tips to maintaining your interlocking driveways and walkways.

In summary, interlocking pavers are the most versatile material in the market for your driveway, walkways and backyard patio, but in order to ensure its longevity, work with a professional interlocking contractor. Here at Markstone Landscaping, we have over 15 years of experience in the interlocking paver business and will be more than happy to spend some time with you to give you free advice and quote.

Benefits of Interlock versus Asphalt Driveways https://markstonelandscaping.com/benefits-of-interlock-versus-asphalt-driveways/ Mon, 30 Apr 2018 21:00:59 +0000 http://www.mayascapes.com/msl/?p=4871 The post Benefits of Interlock versus Asphalt Driveways appeared first on Markstone Landscaping.

]]>

In recent years, interlock pavers have become a popular choice for driveway surfaces. Its versatility, durability and longevity are amongst some of the benefits that comes with it. But how does interlock compare against asphalt driveways in Ontario? With our defined seasons, it is important to install a material that can withstand the hot summer days as well as the harsh winters. Below is a comparison between interlock paver and asphalt driveways in particular for Ontario properties. For a comprehensive look at the benefits of concrete versus asphalt driveways, click here.

Interlock Paver Driveway Versus Asphalt Driveways in Ontario

Both interlock pavers and asphalt has its pros and cons. Depending on your priority – budget, style or durability – it will be your deciding factor of which material to pave.

Cost

Asphalt requires the least initial investment when it comes to driveway paving. It is the most economical material available. However, the cost to maintain and repair surpasses all other choices. With interlock pavers, it may have a higher price tag, but the cost to keep it looking as great as it was first installed is minimal.

Design

Removal of Driveway

Interlock pavers come in all different shapes, sizes, colors and patterns. This allows for endless design possibilities for homeowners to express their personal style. Asphalt, on the other hand, only comes in black.

Maintenance

Newly paved asphalt driveways need to be seal coated within the first year of installation and every 3 – 5 years after that. The purpose of this seal is to protect it from the sun’s UV rays and also moisture. If moisture penetrates the asphalt driveway, it will create weak spots that may lead to problems in the future. Asphalt requires the highest level of maintenance amongst driveway materials.

Interlock pavers do not require much maintenance after it is properly paved. Aside from occasional power washing and refilling of polymeric sand to avoid weed growth, it does not demand further attention.

Repair

Asphalt driveways are susceptible to cracks caused by the expansion and contraction from the cold, harsh winters and the blaring, hot sunny summer days. To repair potholes, cracks or patches of sunken asphalt (caused by settling of the ground after the driveway was surfaced with fresh asphalt), it requires a whirlwind way to patch it or sometimes repaving will be needed. However, since interlock pavers are individual pieces, repairing is easy. Simply remove and replace the unwanted paver and your interlock driveway will look brand new.

Longevity

With Ontario’s extreme temperature, asphalt driveways last around 8 – 10 years and will have a degree of chips, cracks and fading of color as the years pass. Interlock, being one of the strongest driveway material, has a lifespan of 20 – 30 years.

Summary of Interlock Paver versus Asphalt Driveways

 Asphalt Interlock Paver
Cost More economical to install Less economical to install
Design Flexibility Available only in black Endless possibilities
Maintenance Resealing required every 3 – 5 years Minimal
Repair Difficult Easy
Longevity 8 – 10 years 20 – 30 years

Pavers may incur a higher upfront cost for the installation, however, with its low maintenance, ease of repair, durability and unique design options, it may well be worth the investment. Interlock not only adds curb appeal but will increase your property value. If you want to learn more about interlock pavers, read our article “All You Need to Know About Interlock Pavers”.

Concrete-DrivewayWhen deciding on paving a driveway, there are several materials to choose from. Each option comes with its own unique characteristics and offerings. In this article, we will discuss the pros and cons of paving concrete versus asphalt driveways in Ontario.

Concrete Driveway Benefits in Ontario

Concrete driveways are known for its durability, longevity and versatility. If installed properly and to code, this material requires minimal maintenance while keeping weed growth at bay, making it looking its best for years to come. Concrete can also withstand more environmental elements of the freeze and thaw cycle, a definite benefit for Ontario homeowners.

In addition, with concrete’s vast color, pattern and texture choices (such as exposed aggregate concrete), it allows for unique driveway design and style. This in turn adds to the curb appeal and increases the value of a home. Click here for a full list of concrete driveway pros & cons.

Although concrete driveways may cost more to install than asphalt driveways, its long shelf life – lasting upward of 25 years – will make the initial investment well worth the price.

Asphalt Driveway Benefits in Ontario

When compared to concrete, asphalt driveway installation is more economical. However, asphalt driveway has a life expectancy of approximately 8 years – which is much shorter than concrete. In addition, its limited color pallet, with only black as the option, makes it limiting on design and curb appeal.

Ontario’s temperature fluctuates between 30 degrees Celsius to -20 degrees Celsius in any given year. With this extreme temperature change, asphalt may crack easily after a couple of winters. And during the heat wave days of summer, the black asphalt absorbs the heat, making the surface extremely hot. This high temperature may cause the asphalt to become pliable and soft which makes it easy to scratch, scruff or chip away. In addition, children are advised not to play sidewalk chalk or toys on the driveway to avoid their skin coming in contact with the hot surface which may cause burns.

Summary of Concrete versus Asphalt Driveways

 Asphalt Concrete
Shelf Life Max. 8 years +25 years
Maintenance Resealing required every 3 – 5 years minimal
Colour Choices Only comes in black Extensive
Pattern & texture choices Not applicable Extensive
Cost More economical to install Less economical to install

Spring Driveway Maintenance To Keep Your Concrete and Interlocking Driveway Looking Great https://markstonelandscaping.com/spring-driveway-maintenance-keep-driveway-looking-great/ Sat, 02 Dec 2017 15:10:17 +0000 http://www.mayascapes.com/msl/?p=4702 The post Spring Driveway Maintenance To Keep Your Concrete and Interlocking Driveway Looking Great appeared first on Markstone Landscaping.

]]>

After a severe winter where snow, hail, freeze & thaw cycles occur all too frequently, anything left out in the cold are bound to bare an impact. To ensure your concrete and interlocking driveway in Ontario is looking its best every year, Spring driveway maintenance is recommended. Here are ways to identify problem areas that may have surfaced after a harsh winter and steps to tackle them.

Concrete Driveway Spring Maintenance

When it comes to low maintenance and cost effective driveway options, concrete takes the reign. Asphalt may be more economical to install, however, with the maintenance it requires, the time and money spent in the long run will surpass that of concrete. With concrete’s strong composition, it makes it durable and perfect for areas that are frequently used. To ensure your concrete driveway lives up to all the benefits it has to offer, make sure it is installed by a reputable and experienced contractor. Every step of the concrete installation must be followed to code in order for your concrete driveway to look great for years to come.

The only maintenance and preventative tip for concrete driveways for spring is to power wash and (re)apply sealer to the driveway. De-icing salt may have wreak havoc to your concrete driveway causing flaking, cracking, spalling, pitting & chips. Power washing your concrete driveway will rinse off any salt residue from the winter months. Apply an epoxy coating on your concrete driveway after all salt has been removed and driveway is dry. This will prevent salted water from seeping into the concrete for subsequent winters. Make this a routine every 2 – 3 years to keep the salt water at bay. For more concrete maintenance tips, here are 5 simple tips you can do.

Interlock Paver Driveway Spring Maintenance

Unlike asphalt which is only offered in black, interlock pavers are versatile and can create unique driveway designs. Follow simple spring time maintenance to ensure your curb appeal is intact and fix small repairs regularly to avoid the cost of repaving your whole drivewayFor interlock design ideas for your front entrance and walkway, check article Interlocking Design Ideas For Your Front Entrance and Walkways. For additional interlock maintenance tips for your home landscaping, click here. If you want to know more about this popular landscaping material, click here for a comprehensive look at interlock pavers.

Identifying problems on interlock paver driveways:

1. Sunken or shifted pavers

1Once all the snow has melted, inspect your interlock paver driveway for areas where the space between each stone is visibly larger. In addition, look for surface dips and uneven ground. Displaced pavers are usually caused by base or sub base settlement. Water may pool on top or underneath the pavers. During the colder months, it will freeze and create a slippery surface on the top or dislodge the stones further if trapped underneath.

2. Loss of sand in driveway border

Thoroughly examine the border of your driveway to look for pockets of loss gravel base and sand. The sand border ensures the driveway’s stability. During the colder months, the sand may have escaped and washed out from under the pavers.

3. Unwanted growth

Check for weed, moss or lichen growth on or between pavers. These unwanted vegetation appears if seeds make their way in-between the joints and germinate.

Interlock Paver Driveway Maintenance & Preventative Tips:

1. Reapply aggregate base to reset pavers

If pavers have shifted or sunken during the winter months, remove the paver or section of pavers that requires leveling. Add enough sand to the base so that the final surface will be level with the rest of the driveway. Compact additional sand and place paver into place. Use polymeric sand to keep pavers in place by sweeping them into the joints.

2. Replace lost driveway border material

Refill the sand border of the driveway with polymeric sand to keep your driveway stable. It is recommended to do a quick check twice a year (spring and fall) to ensure everything is in place. If required, replace any lost sand.

3. Keeping unwanted vegetation at bay

Once there is space between each paver (caused by un-stabilized sand in the joints), weed, moss or lichen will grow. The first step to a clean, clear paver driveway is to treat the unwanted growth with an appropriate weed killer. Upon confirmation of a successful termination of the weeds, use a power washer to remove the dead growth. Sweep joint sand across the pavers’ surface ensuring all space between each paver is filled liberally. Remove excess sand.

4. Power Wash & Apply Sealer

4To revive the natural beauty of interlock pavers, power washing is the most effective and economical solution. Removal of dirt, grime and weeds will instantly restore faded colors. Finish it off with a sealer and it will protect the pavers from weather elements and preserve its appearance for the next 2 to 3 years.

Performing a yearly spring driveway maintenance can help kick off a beautiful, clean, weed free driveway for the full summer. If small damages are ignored, it will turn into larger problems in the coming years which may become costly to fix.

At Markstone Landscaping, we can help you with your landscaping needs. Call us for a consultation or a free no-obligation quote. We’re here to make sure your driveway’s curb appeal is at its best for the whole summer ahead.

The numerous benefits of using interlock pavers for driveways and walkways for both commercial and residential properties is the main reason for its popularity. Even though pavers cost slightly more than concrete or asphalt to install, home owners reap the benefits of its durability, curb appeal and much more that this material offers, thus saving money in the long run.

Benefits of Interlocking Pavers

Fast Installation

Interlock can be installed rather quickly and in any climate. Unlike asphalt or concrete, you can walk or drive on your newly paved interlock driveway immediately.

Durability

Pavers are strong and considered very weather resistant. When installed properly, it has a life expectancy of over 30 years. Cracked pavers can be repaired easily since each paver can be individually replaced.

Low Maintenance

It doesn’t take much effort to keep your interlock driveway looking good. Simply hose down the driveway to remove dirt and for a real clean, high pressure washing will do the trick. Most pavers come pre-sealed so there is no need to re-seal after installation.

Curb Appeal & Unique Style

Interlock pavers not only add curb appeal to your property, it can also allow you to express your own style. With the wide array of colors and a variety of paver shapes, your driveway can be your canvas to show your personal style. For interlock front entrance and walkway inspirations, click here.

Environmentally Friendly

Interlock pavers reduces water runoffs because of its permeable surface. Unlike asphalt or concrete, rain water on pavers will naturally infiltrate into the ground. It also traps suspended solids, process nutrients and oils and immobilize heavy metals.

Winter Weather Proof

Snow can be plowed, blown or shoveled off interlock pavers without causing any damages as with using common de-icing products (salt to calcium-chloride). In addition, like most materials, pavers expand and contract during freeze-thaw cycles. Because gaps between pavers are filled with sand, it gives way to these occurrences without producing surface cracks.

Safe

Interlock pavers have a non-skid and non-slip surface which makes it safe to walk or drive on, even after rain storms. It also makes it an ideal choice for landscaping around pool areas.

Disadvantages of Interlock Pavers

With all its benefits, interlock pavers also have disadvantages. Since pavers use polymer sand to bind it together, weeds can grow between them as the sand wear away from regular use or from wind erosion.
