When it comes to enhancing the aesthetic appeal and durability of outdoor spaces like driveways, walkways and back patios, choosing the right material is crucial. While there are many material options to choose from, including interlocking stone and concrete, one of the most popular options is Brushed Concrete. In this article, we will explore what brushed concrete is, its advantages, and why it’s an ideal choice for your driveway, walkway, and backyard patio.

What is Brushed Concrete?

Brushed concrete is the entry level finish among the four types of concrete finish offered by Markstone Landscaping. It is a finishing technique that creates a textured pattern on the surface of freshly poured concrete. After the concrete has been poured, levelled and smoothened, a broom is used to create brush strokes on the drying concrete, leaving behind a subtle, visually appealing texture. This process adds an element of style and grip, making it an excellent choice for areas where slip resistance is important.

Benefits of Brushed Concrete

Brushed concrete gives you all the benefits that concrete offers, including the following:

 1. Enhanced Slip Resistance: One of the primary advantages of brushed concrete is its improved traction. The textured surface provides a reliable grip, reducing the risk of accidents due to slips and falls, especially in areas prone to water or heavy foot traffic.
 2. Durability and Longevity: Brushed concrete is highly durable and built to withstand the test of time. It can handle the weight of vehicles and foot traffic without significant wear and tear, making it an excellent long-term investment for your outdoor spaces.
 3. Low Maintenance: Unlike other materials such as pavers or natural stone, brushed concrete requires minimal maintenance. It does not require regular sealing or extensive cleaning, saving you time and effort in the long run.
 4. Cost-Effective: When compared to high-end materials like natural stone or stamped concrete, brushed concrete offers an affordable alternative without compromising on functionality. It provides a cost-effective solution for homeowners looking to enhance their outdoor areas on a budget.
 5. Customization Options: Brushed concrete can be customized to suit your aesthetic preferences. It comes in various colors, allowing you to choose a shade that complements your home’s exterior. Additionally, your concrete contractor can create different broom textures to achieve the desired look, from simple textures to a more pronounced pattern. And you can easily add borders using other finishes (e.g. exposed aggregate concrete, stamped concrete), or material (e.g. interlocking stone) to level up the aesthetics.

Brushed concrete offers a winning combination of style, durability, and practicality, making it an excellent choice for driveways, walkways, and backyard patios. Given its the least labour-intensive concrete finish, it’s a great option for homeowners looking for an economical and slip-resistant concrete driveway, walkway and/or backyard patio.

Are you considering concrete for your driveway, walkway or backyard patio? If you think concrete is boring, you may want to think again. There are many different types of concrete finishes to choose from, and you have the option of adding colour, borders and cut lines to give it a unique look and feel. Below, we’ve outlined four of the most popular types of concrete finish.

Four Types of Concrete Finish

Brushed Concrete
Brushed Concrete is a simple yet effective way to add some texture to the concrete and is the base level concrete finish offered at Markstone Landscaping. When the concrete is freshly poured, while the surface is still wet, a broom is used to brushed across the surface to create a brushed concrete texture. Brushed concrete may be sealed with a penetrating sealer by request

Exposed Aggregate Concrete
Exposed aggregate concrete is a type of concrete finish where the top layer is removed to expose the added aggregates. Pea gravel is added into the concrete mixture. After the concrete is poured, a chemical is applied to the surface to prevent the top-most layer from curing. The next day, this top layer is washed off to expose the pea gravel texture. Exposed concrete is finished with a high gloss sealer

Stamped Concrete
A stamped concrete finish is created by impressing textured forms onto the surface of the concrete before it has set. This texture may be enhanced with the application of colour to create contrast. Stamped concrete is finished with a high gloss, slip-resistant sealer

Modern (or Limestone-Finished) Concrete
Modern concrete is a smooth, matte finish concrete which resembles limestone. Once the concrete is poured and set, the surface is hand-polished and sandblasted. It is then finished with a penetrating sealer to provide a protective matte finish.

Options for your Concrete Project

Concrete Colours

Most concrete projects use the natural colour of concrete. However, if you’d like to add colour to your concrete landscape, you can choose from our integral colour or colour hardener colour palettes.

Colour Hardener is a coloured powder used to colour the surface of your concrete after it has been poured, while Integral Colour is a coloured powder that is mixed into the concrete while its still in the concrete truck. With Integral Colour, your concrete will be coloured all the way through as opposed to a layer of colour on the surface when using the Colour Hardener option.

Concrete Borders and Cuts

Add a finishing touch to your concrete project by adding a border and/or cuts.

Concrete borders can be a trowel or stamped borders. A trowel finish border is a smooth border created with a trowel, while a stamped border is created by impressing a texture into the border and finishing it with a colour hardener.

Concrete cuts are more than just a decorative way to finish your project – they serve to ensure that your concrete does not crack in unsightly places. You have the option of choosing square, diamond or custom cuts.

The average price of concrete projects will vary depending on the concrete finish you choose along with other factors. Contact us to learn more about the various concrete options, or to request a no-obligation quote for your driveway, front entrance and backyard.

We field many questions from homeowners in terms of which material to choose for their driveway, walkway, front entrance and backyard patio, whether interlock or concrete. As covered in this article, both have their benefits. That said, there is no reason why homeowners can’t use both interlocking and concrete materials around their property. You can take advantage of the benefits that each material has to offer to get the best aesthetics at a budget that meets your requirements while keeping maintenance to a minimum.

In this article, we’re highlighting one project we’ve done in Mississauga where we used various different materials for landscaping their driveway, front entrance, sidewalk, backyard and pool deck.

Combining Interlocking and Concrete Around your Property

On this property, our client wanted the durability of concrete without compromising on aesthetics. With this in mind, we combined interlocking stone around the pool area which modernizes the backyard area while using exposed aggregate concrete for the driveway and sidepath to ensure the overall landscaping project stays within the budget. In addition, we added some accents in places where possible, such as the jet black front entrance and stamped concrete borders to enhance the overall aesthetics.

Driveway with Exposed Aggregate Concrete

Exposed aggregate concrete is great for the driveway as it provides a certain colour and texture that gives it that unique, modern look over regular concrete. In additional, all decorative concrete done by Markstone Landscaping includes high gloss sealing that always protects concrete from any oil or rust stains. For this driveway, we used exposed aggregate concrete with stamped concrete borders to give it a nice accent with the look of natural store.

Front Entrance with Interlocking Steps

To provide some contrast that also complements the exposed aggregate concrete, we used jet black pavers for the front entrance in a wet lay application, and set in concrete with mortared joints.

Walkway with Exposed Aggregate

Exposed aggregate sidepath is a great and economical way to clean up the side of the house.

Backyard Patio and Pool Deck

The backyard area is the main focus of this landscaping, so we set out to provide a modern and tranquil space for our clients to spend time in.

This project also included a vinyl swimming pool installation by our sister company, Mayascapes Pools, and we combined large interlocking slabs around the pool deck with the jet black pavers for the patio area for a more modern look.

For the pool deck, we used large interlocking stone slab. These stones were very nice to work with, and on this particular project, we had to use our suction cup attachments to ensure these big slabs were laid flush together.

To tie in the backyard area with the front entrance, we again used jet black natural stone for the patio as well as for the steps going into the walkout basement.

Ensuring the Longevity of your Interlocking Driveway and Patio: Choosing the Right Sand During Installation https://markstonelandscaping.com/ensuring-the-longevity-of-your-interlocking-driveway-and-patio/ Mon, 08 Jun 2020 20:39:23 +0000 https://markstonelandscaping.com/?p=6084 The post Ensuring the Longevity of your Interlocking Driveway and Patio: Choosing the Right Sand During Installation appeared first on Markstone Landscaping.

]]>

In our previous articles, we have mentioned that one of the primary benefits of using interlocking pavers on your driveway and backyard patio is that it doesn’t require as much maintenance over time, other than the occasional power wash and refilling of polymeric sand. This is predicated on the fact that the interlocking pavers were properly and professionally installed from the very start.

Based on our many years of experience as interlocking contractors, the key to ensuring the longevity of your stone pavers is highly dependent on the sand that is used during the construction process. Not all sand is the same, and some are better suited for use on interlocking paver projects.

For the bedding layer, we use limestone screening for the bedding material. It is this gravel bedding that provides final levelling properties and helps secure the paver units in place.

The other area where sand is used is for filling paver joints. The right type of sand for filling in the joints between individual stone pavers is a sand mixture that has multiple grain sizes as well as sharp edges. For this purpose, we don’t use very fine sand since they are more likely to be washed or blown away from the joints over time. Filler sand needs to bind together to create a smooth surface while not slipping and sliding and moving around. The best sand to use in between the paver joints is polymeric sand

Benefits of Polymeric Sand for Interlocking Paver Filler Joints

Polymeric sand is water-activated and is made of a mixture of graded sand and binder. When polymeric sand is exposed to moisture, it forms a strong yet flexible bond to create the strongest interlocking properties possible. This prevents erosion caused by rain and wind, which makes polymeric sand a great material to resist the harsh conditions and extreme weather swings that happens in Ontario. Best of all, polymeric sand has the added benefit of preventing weed growth in between pavers. This is why we recommend putting more polymeric sand in between the stones as part of our tips to maintaining your interlocking driveways and walkways.

In summary, interlocking pavers are the most versatile material in the market for your driveway, walkways and backyard patio, but in order to ensure its longevity, work with a professional interlocking contractor. Here at Markstone Landscaping, we have over 15 years of experience in the interlocking paver business and will be more than happy to spend some time with you to give you free advice and quote.

Best Places to Use Exposed Aggregate Concrete Around Your Home

In recent years, exposed aggregate concrete has become a popular choice for use on driveway, patio, pool decks and front entrances. With its combination of various aggregates exposed, it breathes new life into the standard gray tone in traditional concrete landscapes. Possessing the same durability as plain concrete, exposed aggregate concrete also requires minimal maintenance as compared to interlocking pavers.

Where Should Exposed Aggregate Concrete Be Installed

Like concrete, exposed aggregate concrete can be installed anywhere around your home. Driveways, walkways, backyard patios … you name it, it can be done!

In addition to its ability to withstand wear and tear as well as low maintenance quality, exposed aggregate concrete is also skid-resistance, thanks to its rough surface, unlike the smooth finish with regular concrete. As such, exposed aggregate concrete has been a favorite for pool deck installations. Not only does it make the area more aesthetically pleasing but it also makes the pool deck area safe for pool goers.

Ideas for Designing your Backyard Patio

Adding a backyard patio for your home provides a great place for you to relax and unwind, as well as to entertain friends and families outdoors. To ensure you get the most benefit from your patio, some planning and forethought will help towards your long-term enjoyment of your backyard. In this article, we outline some of the key considerations when planning to install a patio for your backyard.

Type of Material for your Patio

You can choose to have a concrete patio or interlock patioeach have their benefits – and the right decision is based on your personal style preferences and budget. There are many pictures online to get ideas of what you like, you you can also check out our gallery page to see pictures of the many backyard patios we’ve done, both concrete and interlock patios. In addition, below are some articles and featured projects that we recommend:

Size of the Patio

Look at your backyard and decide on a general size for the patio based on how you plan to use it and your personal preferences. Are you looking to cover your entire backyard or are you looking to keep some grass/gardens? If you plan on just having a table and a barbecue, a simple 12’ x 12’ patio is suitable. If you plan on also having a seating area, play area or fire pit, then you will want to go much wider. If your house has steps or window wells, then you may want to go deeper than 12’ as you are losing a lot of usable space.

Shape of the Patio

Next is to decide on the shape of your patio, and whether you want to keep it simple or achieve a more intricate design. Some popular backyard patio styles would be:

 • keeping everything modern with straight lines and 90 degree corners;
 • having it in the shape of a circle or kidney; or
 • going with a random shaped patio.

Bear in mind that curved patios can cost more on the labour and wasted material as everything will need to be cut manually. Also, where there are curved cuts, you will notice more imperfections.

Type of Pavers for the Patio

If you decide to go with an interlock patio, you then have to choose the paver stone and pattern. There are small and large pavers, simple one size patterns or intricate 4 size patterns, and dark borders or contrasting accent pavers. There are many different options to choose from, so the best is to work with your contractor and let them know your preferences.

One of our landscaping customers in Mississauga was tired of mowing their lawn and decided to replace their grass backyard with a modern concrete patio. The photographs below outlines our process for installation of a concrete backyard patio using specialized landscaping crew (which includes the excavation crew, framing crew, cement pouring crew and cleanup crew) to ensure our services are delivered in an efficient manner.

Excavation

After the customer finalizes the design of the backyard patio we provided them, the next step is to bring in the excavation crew. Our dedicated excavation crew comes in with a mini excavator and lots of plywood to protect all grass and anything that could possibly be damaged by our mechanical wheel barrows or excavators. The lead man on site will have a copy of the drawing and will first mark out the areas they will be digging. Once that is done, they will use their laser lever to see what our heights will be. It is very important that we have at least 6″-8” of compacted gravel in any backyard or side path. It is also very important that you water and compact at least 4 times. This project was 1400 square feet and took the crew 1 day to complete.

Framing

Once the excavation is complete, we bring in our dedicated framing team. On this particular backyard concrete patio project, we did the concrete pour in two phases. The first phase was to pour concrete border with a light grey accent. Once all the borders have been poured, we then remove the forms and pour the inside. The framing team has a very important role to make sure all forms are square, plum, and sloping away from the house at a 1%-2% grade. Framing a project of this complexity took two days to complete.

Concrete Pouring Day 1

For the first day of pouring concrete, the framing team builds ramps for the wheelbarrows to get to all the borders. We like to use wheelbarrows as opposed to bringing in a pump truck as there is a lot less likely hood of any of the frames being damaged or moved. Pouring the borders and stairs took half a day to complete.

Concrete Pouring Day 2

Our dedicated pouring team comes on site and starts stripping all the forms to get ready to pour the inside pieces. Our pouring guys also install 10M rebar 16” OC with a minimum of 4” thickness of 32MPA in backyards and pathways. Anything that will have a vehicle or heavier load will have a minimum of 6” thick. This project had a modern smooth finish, which means we do two rounds of a magnesium finish to allow all the bleed water to come up. Once it’s hard enough and we know all the bleed water is gone, we do a final pass with the aluminum trowels to give it that clean crisp look. This part took pouring team 1 day to complete.

Trowel Finish of Concrete Patio

For the final trowel finish, we first screened and place all our concrete using a magnesium float, allowing the bleed water to rise for better workability and ensuring we have no trapped water. After waiting about 30-45 minutes for the concrete to harden up, we then go on boards and trowel by hand with the magnesium to take out any previous trowel marks. We repeat this process until all lines are gone. We make our final pass using a aluminum trowel to give the concrete a nice sheen.

Cutting Stress-Release Cuts

Next day our dedicated clean up crew comes in and strips all the forms and cuts all the lines on the concrete. The cuts are primarily there to relieve the stress of the slab moving up and down, but it can also be done in a way to give the patio a more attractive look.

At Markstone Landscaping, we love working with customers who are willing to look outside the box and try something creative. For this concrete patio project, we created 45 degree cuts to look like diamonds with tile shape cuts in the middle of the patio. We thought it would be a great idea to break up the patio in different sections so that it doesn’t look like a parking lot, and I think we achieved this. It is always important to cut ¼ of the depth of the concrete slab, so 1″-1.25″is recommended. This step took the clean up crew one day.

A Modern Concrete Patio for your Backyard

Making the decision to putting a patio in your backyard is an important one — it is not as easy as changing paint in your family room. That being said, we highly recommend customers work with landscape contractors that have a true understanding of the scope of work to make sure that the project is not only structurally sound, but that is also has a beautiful finish that you can be proud to show your friends.

How Long Does Interlock Pavers Last?

When considering a material to be used for your landscaping, interlock pavers are second to none. They are extremely durable, provides limitless design options and easy to maintain. Most importantly, when installed properly, interlock pavers can last upwards of 40+ years. This is due in part by the durable and weather resistant materials that are used in making these pavers.

How to Prolong Interlock Pavers Longevity

Regular Maintenance

Each individual paver’s lifespan can outlast 4 decades of wear and tear, however, when interlocked together as part of a landscape, simple yearly spring maintenance is recommended. If an interlock project is maintained regularly, it will last minimum 7 years with very limited issues. You may notice it starts to require more extensive maintenance towards the 10 year mark such as edge stones (borders) shifting or certain areas having sunk in or heaved in comparison to other areas. It is quite easy to fix these issues and does not require you to purchase new pavers. The old pavers in the problematic areas need to be lifted out and cleaned, gravel needs to be added or graded and the pavers can be reinstalled. Once this is done (properly) you should gain another 7 to 10 years of problem free pavement.

Selecting suitable pavers for your application

Choosing the correct product for your hardscape is also key to ensuring your pavers will last for its full duration. Typically pavers will vary in durability based on their thickness. 60mm to 80mm pavers are the standard for residential use. The thicker the product typically the more durable it is. We usually recommend using 80mm pavers on parking areas as they do offer a more durable solution. Anything less than 60mm cannot be used on parking areas as the products will shift and have a tendency to crack under the weight of a vehicle.

If you have questions on interlocking pavers or would like to have professional landscapers help you repair and upkeep your interlock pavers, give us a call. We have been servicing residents in and around Mississauga for over 10 years and provide pick up/re-lay and wash/seal interlocking services.

With regular maintenance and timely repairs, your interlock pavers will keep looking its best for decades to come.

]]>

By definition, interlock is “to connect so that motion of any part is constrained by another”. As suggested by its name, interlock pavers are a type of paving material, commonly made of cement or concrete, that is connected together by a mixture of pavers, bedding sand, edge restraint and joint sand. When installed properly, this combination becomes a unified whole, making it strong and durable. Interlocking paver blocks also have the ability to transfer loads and stresses laterally by means of an arching of bridging between units, spreading the load over a large area, reduces the stress thereby allowing heavier loads and traffic over sub-bases which normally would require heavily reinforced concrete.

Interlock Paver Installation & Limitless Design Features

Interlocking pavers have the advantage of being an easy self-installation paving material for homeowners or contractors. With its special interlocking feature, it enables pavers to be easily installed without the use of mortar.

This versatile paving material is modular, meaning that they connect together to form a variety of geometric designs. And with the vast color and design selections, it has become a popular choice for homeowners today. Interlocking pavers is an alternative to virtually any application that you would normally use bricks or concrete for. From driveways to patios, walkways to pool decks, interlock pavers are aesthetically pleasing, simulating the effects of cobblestone pathways and increasing the property value with its elegant curb appeal.

Interlock Paver’s Durability & Life Expectancy

Interlock pavers are all in their essence durable and can last upwards of 40+ years. With proper maintenance and timely repairs, pavers can keep looking great for years to come. Almost all the major manufacturers offer comparable quality products with similar designs and sizes, differing mostly only by name. There are varying thickness for interlock pavers and depending on the location these products will be installed, the correct thickness must be adhered to ensure the prolonged durability of the paved surface. For instance, 60mm pavers is substantial enough for areas used for standard foot traffic. However, we recommend using 80mm pavers on parking areas as they offer a more durable solution and will refrain from shifting and cracking under the weight of a vehicle.

Choosing the Right Interlock Pavers

There are many factors that come into play when choosing the right interlock pavers for your landscape project. Here are 4 things to think about to help you decide on the perfect paver:

 1. Location: where these pavers will be installed (backyard, pool deck, parking surface etc.) all contribute to the decision making as different pavers are more suitable for certain areas. For the best places to install interlock pavers, click here.
 2. Design: What look do you wish to attain. Simple? Modern? Traditional? Or random look? There are pavers that can achieve any style you fancy, such as these design ideas for your interlocking front entrance and walkways, or these various design options for interlocking backyard patio.
 3. Budget: There can be a significant difference from one paver to the next in pricing. Some products come in at $2 per square foot whereas others cost north of $15. Determining the amount you wish to spend on your landscaping project will help narrow down your choices.
 4. Color: Once you have selected the paver that you feel is right for you, you will need to decide on a color. There are many different colors available that all vary from one product to the next. This task may either be very simple (if you already know what palette you want for your landscape) or nerve wrecking when presented with the abundant of color choices.
Interlock Pavers Warranty

Interlock pavers are typically covered by the manufacturer for a 25 year period. Their warranty refers to the physical products structural capacity. Things different manufacturers might warranty are; discoloration, deteriorating products, inconsistent molds, ext. If you are shipped an inferior product that does not meet the companies quality standard, they will usually replace the products at their own cost. If you notice issues with the products after your contractor has installed them, you will need to contact a rep from the manufacturer to come out and take a look at the products in person. If they accept that it is a manufacturing or product defect, than they will ship you replacement products to have installed by a contractor of your choosing at YOUR cost.

At Markstone Landscaping, we warranty our WORKMANSHIP for two years. This covers any issues with sinking, shifting, settling, or heaving. You will typically notice these issues occur after the first winter. Usually winters have the most affect on interlock pavers due to the ground constantly freezing and thawing. We like to provide a two year warranty to enable two complete winters to see if any issues arise. If problems arise after the two years, it becomes less of a workmanship issue and more of a maintenance. If Interlock pavers are not maintained regularly (every 2 to 3 years), you will notice gaps between the pavers will increase in size, which allows the pavers to shift and debris to accumulate in the spacing. Please refer to our article Interlock maintenance to see how to maintain your interlock pavers.

Lawns Without Grass Advantages

Revolutionize your outdoor space with innovative landscaping that transcends the traditional grassy lawn. Imagine a front yard or backyard that embodies beauty without the backbreaking work: no more relentless mowing, watering, or battling weeds and pests. Instead of the usual grass lawn, consider the charm of effortless perennials, the elegant touch of interlocking stonework, and the modern touch of limestone-finished concrete with artificial turf. Your home will boast curb appeal with a unique, low-maintenance yard that’s not just visually appealing but environmentally conscious, saving water and eliminating the need for harsh chemicals. Reinvent your personal oasis with a grass-free landscape—where beauty meets practicality.

Grass-Free Alternatives

There are many options to be had when designing a yard without grass. Homeowners who don’t like the barren look of just concrete or interlock can interlace the space with flower beds, shrubs or other evergreen plants. Some may opt to incorporate a cozy sitting area for people watching in the front yard or trade in the back yard turf for a private retreat complete with water falls & fire pits. If having grass as part of your back lawn is important but not the maintenance, then artificial turf may be your solution. It looks and feels like grass without the upkeep required. Bear in mind installing artificial turf in the front yard may have some limitations. Before installing, make sure you check the bylaws to ensure it is within city limits.
